The Unintentional Hockey Fan
By Lai Long
Born in Cambodia where words such as ice, cold and hockey do not exist, I would have never imagined that I would play hockey. Even when I moved to the U.S., where hockey is a national sport, and particularly to a town better known as HockeyTown, I was raised in an environment where hockey was never once watched at any friends’ or family gatherings. That’s when I developed my own theories about this sport and why it could never be for me.
The first misconception was that the sport was only reserved for a certain crowd like your typical suburban Anglo-American crowd. The second fallacy was the affordability factor and the last false belief was that you have to have a large physique to play. All of these theories I have about hockey were proven wrong by the same person who created them – me – after a 50-minute session participating in the Beginner Adult Developmental Hockey League at Suburban Ice – Farmington Hills.
After being around the sport for a little over a month, I see that people of all ages and backgrounds play hockey. And maybe even more surprising is that many of them did not pick up the game until they were adults.
While hockey can be expensive, it’s just like any other sport – you need your equipment, practice time and coaching. For those that might not have the financial resources to support this interest, the thought of hockey might just be that, a thought. However, I realized that hockey can be as expensive and inexpensive as you want it to be. And with the generosity of those in the game, there are resources out there that can get you into hockey.
It was a guy named Peter whom I’ve come to know after working out every morning at Suburban Ice – Farmington Hills that pushed me to sign up for the league. Knowing that the cost of equipment was holding me back, he came in with a duffle bag full of old hockey gear for me. This equipment was passed along to Peter’s brother and he wanted to give me a chance to try the game and only asked that I pass it along to another hockey enthusiast after I was done. To me, that is the ultimate act of sportsmanship and respect for the game.

My last theory was about the physical make-up required to play the sport. My misconception of the physical characteristic was proven wrong during my first game with the B.A.D. league. My team, the Red Wings, has people from all different age groups and sizes. There are guys out there over 50 years old, guys that may not seem physically fit, guys that have smaller builds and guys that have minor physical disabilities. However, all of these guys have a passion for hockey. The best player on our team is actually the smallest guy on the team – and no, it’s not me. He is smaller than me. He started playing hockey a few years ago but he loves the sport and puts forth the commitment to develop his skills. His ability on the ice far exceeds our biggest and most physically fit guy. He made me realize that your size doesn’t matter as much as your desire to play the game and your commitment to learn it.
I, on the other hand, have just started playing hockey this season. I would consider myself to be physically fit; however, I do lack some of the skills he has. My love for hockey and my desire to learn enable me to pick up some of the basic skills. During our first game, this passion allowed me to score my first goal.
Before I walked into the rink, I bluntly told my teammates that it was my first game and I am not too familiar with the rules. Our center told me to remember that if I didn’t have control of the puck while playing offense, I should head towards the net. There I was skating vigorously towards the opponent’s net as my center was in control of the puck. He took a shot that was deflected by the goalie and I quickly captured the rebound and made a quick shot that went between the goalie’s legs into the net as the clock buzzer was going off.
I can’t describe to you the excitement that came over me after scoring that goal. All I can tell you is that I realized that hockey is not about where you came from, your income or your physical characteristics. It’s about your love for the sport and your enjoyment of the game. I realized that hockey is fun. I would have never thought that during my lifetime I would play, but my curiosity for the sport has made me an unintentional fan.
