SKATING: Learn to Skate

Ice skating is a great way to stay physically fit and have fun. The Suburban Ice - East Lansing Learn to Skate Program is a great place to start for any aspiring hockey player or figure skater, as it is the feeder program for Suburban FUNdamental Hockey and the Lansing Skating Club. The schedule includes classes for all skill levels age 3 through adults.

The Learn to Skate program follows the curriculum of the U.S. Figure Skating program. Lessons are given by highly qualified professional skating instructors. Please direct all questions to the Skating Director, Mo Parisian, at (517) 336-4272.

Program Details

  • First day of class
Skaters should arrive 15 minutes early. Skaters should dress warmly, but allow for freedom of movement. Mittens or gloves and long pants should also be worn. Young skaters should wear a helmet or hat.
  • Name Tags
All skaters will have a name tag with their name and class level, as well as whether skate rental was pre-paid. Name tags can be found on the LTS table by the front desk.
On the first day of class, instructors will be introduced in the lobby and adjacent to the rink and will indicate their class level. The second class and remaining classes the students will meet their instructors on the ice.
  • Instruction/Practice
All classes are 25 minutes of instruction with 25 minutes of supervised practice offered either before or after class depending on the class level the skater is enrolled in. This is for LTS participants only. Parents an/or siblings are not allowed on the ice. During the practice time, skaters are assisted and encouraged to achieve the skills that are appropriate to their level of skating. No games or fast skating is permitted.
  • Class Advancement
It is not unusual for skaters to repeat a class two or more times. Skaters are allowed to develop at their own pace. Skills taught build upon each other, and to move a skater up before they master a skill only makes skating more difficult. Skaters will be evaluated each session to determine progress.

Registration Procedures

  • Fees
The cost of a seven-week session is $90. Skate rental is available for $7 each lesson or $1 per session if paid for at the time of registration. All classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. The number of students per class is limited and the student-to-instructor ratio will be a maximum of 10-to-1.
  • Free Public Skating
All Learn to Skate participants are given a pass that allows them to come and practice at Suburban Ice-East Lansing's public skating sessions. The pass is good for one free session for the duration of the LTS session for which the skater is enrolled. For example, if a student is signed up for a seven-week LTS program, he/she will recieve a punch card good for 7 free skates good for any of the public skating sessions at Suburban Ice-East Lansing during those seven weeks. The pass is not transferable and must be presented at the front desk prior to skating. There will be absolutely no admittance without the public skating pass. This offer does not include the skate rental fee.
  • Make-Up Classes
Due to the size of the program, we are unable to make up classes. It is recommended that the skater use their free open skate pass to practice their skills.
  • Refund/Credit Policy
Please be aware that there is a NO refund policy. This policy includes skate rental after the session begins.
